๐ŸŽˆ What is On Purpose?

On Purpose is a social impact speaker night that celebrates the many shapes and forms that social impact and leadership come in: badass, disruptive, unexpected, creative, big, small and everything in between. You donโ€™t have to wear a suit, have a formal position, or start an NGO to make social impact ripples (and maybe waves).

We invite some known, unknown, expected and unexpected social impact legends to share their stories and challenge what social impact and leadership looks like across an evening of informal conversations. No surprises then, that On Purpose is one of our favourite events on the Social Impact Studio calendar! Lots of gratitude also to our mates at Canon New Zealand who help us make these amazing events happen.

๐ŸŒž What do we talk about?

This year our questions will span a few topics that are top of mind for our team:

  • our journey as Tangata Tiriti

  • unpacking mainstream ideas of social impact and leadership

  • creative change

  • life after uni and work with purpose

  • and anything else that crops up on the night!

๐Ÿ™Œ Who joined us this year?

Boy, do we have some great chats coming your way from some epic people. Scroll on down to find out more!!!

๐ŸŽŸ How do I get a ticket?

Entry to On Purpose is and always has been freeeeeeeee. As we have limited capacity, we ask you to let us know ASAP if you canโ€™t make it so we can offer your seat to someone on our waitlist. We can highly recommend roping in your mates to come along to On Purpose and getting a hit of wisdom, positivity and food for thought together.

Speakers

Jackie Bannon (left) with Liam Arthur (right), co-owners of The Bowling Club Dunedin

Jackie Bannon // The Bowling Club Dunedin

Who decides to have a menu where dinner sells for $4??? Jackie Bannon and Liam Arthur are the co-owners of The Bowling Club Dunedin, a community eatery where everyone can eat well and eat cheaply. What started out as a food truck, quickly blossomed into a brick and mortar restaurant in the heart of Caversham within a year. Jackie and Liam have stolen the hearts and bellies of THOUSANDS of Dunedinites with their welcoming, accessible and delicous meals.

โ€œIโ€™m Jackie, co-founder of The Bowling Club, where we share wholesome & affordable kai with thousands of people each week. Anyone can eat for free at our community eatery. I enjoy challenging the ways we are taught โ€˜things should beโ€™ and creating spaces of connection. My work seems like itโ€™s focused on food, but itโ€™s actually about realising our own agency as a community here in ลŒtepoti and taking collective action.โ€

Ruby Jones // Illustrator

Ruby is an illustrator living in Te Whanganui-a-Tara. She is well known for her simple but impactful drawings that explore themes of love, relationships, mental health, and body image. Ruby is best known for her drawing of two women embracing in a hug, penned with the words โ€œThis is your home and you should have been safe hereโ€, which was shared widely online following the 2019 Christchurch terror attacks. Following this, Ruby was invited to illustrate a cover for Time Magazine. She has since released two books with Penguin Random House - All Of This Is For You (2019) and In This Body (2022).  In her spare time Ruby enjoys watching live music, racing her friends to finish the NYT mini crossword, and reading in the sun. Her favourite book is Just Kids by Patti Smith.

Lily McFarlane // Community-builder

Kia ora koutou e hoa mฤ, Iโ€™m a former Otago uni student, current rat racer, and future retiree - doing my best to stay curious & accepting of all lifeโ€™s mysteries. Iโ€™m a huge fan of embracing unseriousness whilst tackling deeply serious issues and building a variety of bridges between people and the communities they feel motivated to serve. I am merely an infant in the world of organising & movement building but believe the best ideas and learnings come from the communities themselves, so I look forward to not only sharing some of my experience, but to hearing about yours! And my go to series for study distraction? Succession - because you can never figure out who to love and who to hate. If I had a podcast show on a niche subject what would it be? Deepdives into every song on BRAT. Mฤ te wฤ!
