Leadership for Social Change

The Social Impact Studio at the University of Otago is committed to empowering students to become capable, civic-minded leaders who are passionate about making a difference in their communities. We offer programmes for students looking to develop leadership skills grounded in social impact and community engagement.

Whether you’re here for a semester or a full degree, the Social Impact Studio has a pathway for you to develop your skills, make connections, and contribute meaningfully to our community.

1. Emerging Leaders Programme

The Emerging Leaders Programme (ELP) acknowledges and celebrates students’ activities beyond the classroom that enhance personal growth, skill development, and positive community contribution.

The programme combines aspects of socially responsible leadership and employability, helping to develop the well-rounded, engaged and responsible citizens that employers are looking for and our community needs.

2. Global Impact Scholar Programme (coming 2025)

The Global Impact Scholar Programme is crafted for study-abroad and exchange students who want to make the most of their time in New Zealand by contributing to local communities.

Many participants bring previous social impact and volunteering experience, and this programme helps students channel that passion into meaningful engagement in Dunedin.

3. Matariki Global Citizenship Programme

Ours is a globalised world. We’re all inescapably connected, but how do we impact our global community?

Matariki GCP is an online course through which you will complete a series of experiential activities, offline tasks, reflections and discussions that will increase your knowledge and awareness of the UN SDGs whilst developing your leadership potential.
