Emerging Leaders Programme is a co-curricular social purpose and leadership development programme for University of Otago students.

ABOUT THE PROGRAMME

The Emerging Leaders Programme (ELP) is about acknowledging and celebrating students’ activities beyond the classroom that enhance personal growth, skill development, and positive community contribution. The programme combines aspects of socially responsible leadership and employability, helping to develop the well-rounded, engaged and responsible citizens that employers are looking for and our community needs.

The Emerging Leaders Programme is currently in its Pilot Phase, and the participation of each student at this stage will be instrumental in refining this strategically significant initiative.

WHO CAN AND SHOULD DO IT?

Emerging Leaders Programme is open to all current students enrolled at the University of Otago. The programme is self-paced and you can take it up at any stage of your degree. There is no cost to participate.

We greatly encourage participation from students who are Tangata Whenua, Pacific people, people of colour, people with disabilities, and people of all gender expressions and sexual orientations. We know that many students in these groups are highly involved in service to the community and mutual aid, and we hope the ELP can help students channel these experiences in a way that supports their personal and professional development.

WHY WOULD YOU DO IT?

  • Learn how to share your own story - The ELP is designed to help you identify and communicate your skills gained from your activities.

  • Give your academic transcript a friend - Gain a formal record of your co-curricular and extra-curricular activities

  • Learn how to back yourself - Grow your self confidence as you connect your new learning with your personal identity

  • Grow your change-making skills - Reflect on how your local actions contribute to a larger cause.

  • Enhance your employability - It’s just about building and backing yourself up and sharing your story well.
