UniCrew & Volunteering FAQs

It's easy! Visit our “store” Priceless (find it under the Volunteer Roles tab) or stop by the Social Impact Studio to explore current opportunities. More info about what Priceless is and how it works can be found here. You can also sign up for our newsletter or follow us on Instagram for updates on programmes and events.

Not at all! Many opportunities are beginner-friendly and offer training or guidance. You might want to explore one-off opportunities like our Good Deed and Feed to get a taste before committing to an ongoing role.

It’s up to you! Some roles take just an hour or two, while others involve ongoing commitments like an hour or two each week for eight weeks. It’s important to consider what is reasonable for you and within your capacity before committing.

Volunteering has heaps of benefits, such as:
Making a meaningful difference in your community.
Gaining valuable skills and experience for your CV.
Meeting new people and building your network.
Improving your mental well-being through connection and purpose.
Read some stories from students to hear about why they volunteered and the impact it had on them!

UniCrew is part of the Social Impact Studio. Think of the Studio as a record label and UniCrew, along with its programs and events, as the artists. UniCrew represents our public face, while the Studio operates behind the scenes. The Social Impact Studio brings together the University of Otago and the local community to create projects that help society and the environment. UniCrew, our group of students dedicated to volunteering and making a positive difference in the community, is one of the ways we achieve that.

Sure can! Our main thing is working with students and the community, but we absolutely love to see staff getting involved! You’re welcome to browse Priceless and/or join Good Mahi, or email us if you’d like to organise your team getting out into the community on a group project. And don’t forget about your social impact leave!
