Refugee Support Volunteer - NZ Red Cross
Organisation
NZ Red Cross
Description
The Red Cross Pathways to Settlement programme is about connecting former refugee families to their new community. Our volunteers are a friendly face and supportive guide during the initial resettlement process.
You’ll be helping people navigate life in a new country, which might include:
Setting up a home for a family or individual before they move in.
Connecting people with schools, English classes, GPs, and other services.
Helping the family navigate the city or town using public transport.
Learning about another culture and sharing your own.
Being a friendly, welcoming presence.
After successfully completing the training programme, volunteers begin their placement with a newly arrived family or individual. They work in teams to provide support for up to six months. Timing is flexible as responsibilities are shared amongst the team. This role would ideally suit a student who has a more flexible schedule with some daytime availability during the week, although volunteers can also offer support at the weekend.
Requirements
Warm, friendly manner, enthusiasm, a genuine wish to help, and a willingness to learn about cultural differences/traditions/languages.
Time commitment
4-hours a week, 2-hour shifts, 3-month commitment. Busiest during the first six weeks, but tasks shared amongst your team.
Background check
