Dunedin Arts Festival

Purpose

Established in 1999 as the Otago Festival Of The Arts Trust, The Dunedin Arts Festival is the region’s premier festival of high quality performing and visual arts.

Description

Volunteers are an essential part of the Dunedin Arts Festival team, helping them create a fantastic Festival experience for the audiences and artists. This year the festival runs 26th of March through to the 6th of April. Of course, for our incredible volunteers, any shows they work with us, they will get to watch!

They need your help with:

  • Pamphlet and poster distribution - URGENT help needed here! The p and p team will be provided with key locations we are keen to cover to distribute the DAF Programmes - this role is super flexible and can be done at any time convenient for the Volunteer(s). Locations are shared as often as needed and we then simply log locations/streets/shops that have been covered.

  • Box office - volunteers in this role will be the go to person on site that will distribute the comp tickets (door tickets) and assist with payments needing to be cleared (via Eftpos and Cash) on the door. Once guests are seated, our Box Office Volunteer is also welcomed to enjoy the performance. When the show has ended, our Box office person will assist to balance the Cash box (if needed), and list any purchases made with the eftpos machine. FYI - We have made this process super simple so that there is no need for magical math's abilities!

  • Usher - volunteers in this role will be greeting the audiences, assisting with showing people to seats and general health and safety, such as being familiar with emergency exits in the unlikely event of an emergency. We have the most space available for Volunteer opportunities at present! For the calendar of events ahead our ushers will work alongside another volunteer, 1 floating DAF staff members, and the box office volunteer. Once patrons are seated, our volunteers join the audience to enjoy the show. Upon open doors, at the end of the show our volunteers then place themselves near the exit to thank guests for their support, assist with pack down if needed, and then their shift is over! The shifts will mostly be 1 hour long, the longest shift available is 3.5 hrs.

  • Artist liaison - We have a small cohort of travelling artists arriving and departing throughout the Festival. Our Artist Drivers will be provided with a DAF Van, the pick-up and drop off locations, and any other info needed to ensure a smooth transit. The Artist Drivers will need to be comfortable operating a 12 seater vehicle, and need to have a full license (unsure as to weather the vehicle will be Auto or Stick - will let you know asap!). As this person will likely be the first DAF face that the artists meet, we are looking for individuals that are bubbly and enthusiastic and enjoy face to face interactions

Festival volunteers gain valuable event experience, collaborate with festival staff, connect with festival audiences and support the delivery of their vibrant range of performing arts events. We could not host such an awesome calendar of events without the amazing support of local Volunteers, to say thank you for the time and energy put into this festival we are providing each and every volunteer with x2 comp tickets to a show of their choice!(Excemptions for Creedence Clearwater, Wahine Matatoa, Reimagining Mozart, The Veils, Mansfield Park).

We are also readily offering written Reference letters, as we understand that experience is everything!

Requirements

These roles would suit anyone that has an interest in the arts and is happy communicating with a wide of festival goers. Shows vary in terms of length and venues, so it's really about finding what suits your availability and/or show preferences.

A training/orientation briefing will take place for all volunteers in the lead up to the Festival, and a Dunedin Arts Festival staff member and/or the relevant venue manager will be onsite at each event.

Time Commitment

Varies, but generally between 1.5 and 3 hours per shift, depending on the event. Sign up for one, or sign up for many!
