Purpose
Frustrated by commercial, plastic-laden, mainstream period products, one of Sew On's goals is to educate people about healthier alternatives. Period care solutions don't need to be purchased but can be made inexpensively by sewing reusable pads. Sew On encourages people to rethink their period management and consider starting their own sewing groups to make pads for their local communities.
Description
Sew On wants to provide information to encourage as many people with periods as possible to switch to sustainable period options. They are in the process of setting up their Dunedin chapter and are looking for people who are passionate about their cause. Join a team that is working to make a difference in the world with both waste management and women’s health.
They are looking for several sewers to join their team and help in the making of period products for our community. You would be involved in a small group of sewers, to sort fabrics as well as cutting out and sewing materials. This is your chance to have a sewing group free of charge and make valuable items!
Equipment and materials are provided. There will be opportunities to support our environment and build knowledge about women’s health and menstruation.
Once Sew On are set up in Dunedin, there is a potential opportunity to work with chapters in other countries.
Requirements
Experience using a sewing machine would be preferred but not essential, we can provide training
Accuracy in making. We want to produce pads that people love to use, so it will be essential to work with some accuracy
Passion to make a difference in waste management, cost of living, and health
Ability to work independently as well as in a team
The ability and willingness to share knowledge and communicate with a diverse community
While they are looking for lots of sewers, they are also looking for one or two people who are good at pattern-making.
Time commitment
3 hours a week in a group setting - this term we are meeting Mondays from 9.30 to 12.30 and in the evening from 6 pm to 9 pm.
We can have up to nine people per session and have spaces available now and hope for a commitment until end of May.
