Description
Would you love to offer information, advice and, at times, accompany women and families into a safe house, working alongside Ōtepoti Dunedin Whānau Refuge's amazing Volunteers and kaimahi (staff members)?
Ōtepoti Dunedin Whānau Refuge rely on the work of dedicated and committed volunteers to answer their 24/7 crisis line outside of working hours. Whakarongorau triages their calls between the hours of 4:30pm and 9:00am. However, when required, and after appropriate training, their amazing team of Crisis Line Volunteers offer information, advice and sometimes accompany women and families to safe houses, alongside their on call kaimahi (staff members).
What does being a Crisis Line volunteer involve?
As a Crisis Line volunteer you will work remotely so you can continue your everyday activities as long as you have a phone at your side
You will receive ongoing support and training, they will assist you to understand the dynamics of domestic violence
You will use your listening, advocacy, and empathy skills
You will be working with women and children, empowering them to live lives free from violence and abuse
You will be providing non-judgmental support and advocacy to women in crisis
You will be working in an environment that recognizes the needs of a diverse range of women
What's in it for volunteers?
Training consists of one initial group training session (90 mins) followed by an individual interview
(you will also complete additional individual onboarding training)You will receive ongoing bi-monthly group supervision and ongoing support as a part of the role
You will have the opportunity to further develop your listening, advocacy, and empathy skills
There will also be the opportunity to meet and work with other caring community-minded people
Requirements
Crisis Line Volunteers need to:
Be able to commit to Ōtepoti Dunedin Whānau Refuge for a minimum of 12 months
Be 21 years or older
Be a self identified woman
Be living within the Dunedin area
Be able to complete Crisis Line's full training process
Be able to meet the above Crisis Line and supervision obligations
Have been living free from violence for three years
Time commitment
Commit to at least 3-4 shifts per month over a minimum period of 12 months (flexible shifts - work around your schedule!)
Background Check
Police vetting is compulsory for all applicants
