Purpose
The primary function of volunteering within Corrections is to meet the rehabilitative and re-integrative needs of offenders and to support our key outcomes of reducing re-offending. Our aim is to build on the principles of community participation, diversity, offender-improvement and most importantly, rehabilitation and re-integration back into the community.
Description
Department of Corrections is looking for Māori Volunteers (Kaiwhakamana) nominated by an Iwi or National Maori Organisation to visit the prison and help in enabling the wellness and wellbeing of Māori prisoners. The Kaiwhakamana can perform below activities during their visit:
Advise prisoners and whanau (extended family) about whakapapa (genealogy) and tikanga (custom)
Assist prisoners to establish contacts with their iwi (tribe)/hapū (sub-tribe)/whānau (extended family)
Help prisoners with personal, family, relationships and business issues
Provide spiritual/religious support and guidance
Assist prisoners with reintegrate arrangements through their iwi/ hapū/whanau
Provide suggestions and advice to the Minister and Department of Corrections staff on the provision of service to Māori
You will receive a site induction and reimbursement is available for travel costs.
