Purpose

Presbyterian Support Otago works for a fair, just and caring community. Motivated by their Christian heritage, and in partnership with others, PSO works across the generations for positive change, strong families and healthy communities.

Description

Use your crafty skills to upcycle unwanted clothing into new and reusable items while raising funds for PSOs Food Bank and other community services. Shop on Carroll is a local op shop doing good for the community and the environment.

PSO's three Op Shops have now merged to become one retail destination, Shop ON Carroll located at 169 Princes Street. These changes aren’t simply about location, it’s about taking sustainability and upcycling to the next level, doing good for the community and the environment.

Shop on Carroll is looking for has a unique opportunity for volunteers that have an interest in creative upcycling. The main purpose of the role is to turn unsold items into something useful and this can be adapted to your ideas, creativity and ability. Currently they upcycle unsold items of fabrics/clothing and make reusable shopping bags and other items. Your creativity is welcome - you have the idea, you make it!

As a volunteer you can

  • Use their in store machines

  • Just make bags using simple techniques if you're still learning

  • Go wild and create all sorts of weird and wonderful things!

Materials will depend on the season, what's available and the ideas you have.

Benefits of the role

  • Full training is provided - if you're learning and starting out the bags will be simple with training and support provided (this will need to be in-store),

  • If you are more advanced and creative you will be given space to go for it

  • The opportunity to make difference while enjoying working with others & developing new skills

  • The knowledge that you are taking sustainability and upcycling to the next level, while raising funds for PSO's community services

  • If you are keen on learning about roles in other departments, the managers are open to and supportive of you developing in the role as well.

Requirements

  • Enthusiastic, creative, and love creating new things

  • Enjoy working with people from a range of cultures and backgrounds

  • Be someone who loves working in a dynamic environment where no two days are the same

  • Have an interest in any of the following is a bonus: Crafts, sewing, fashion, people, sustainability, reduced waste

Time commitment

Available to help out for a few hours each week/fortnight: Tuesday - Friday between 10am and 4pm

  • At a time that suits you within store hours

  • Ideally a minimum of 2 hrs a fortnight to as many as you wish
