Language Support Volunteers - University of Otago
Language Support Volunteers - University of Otago
Description
Help facilitate English conversations, so that others have a chance to practice and improve their English speaking skills.
Conversational English Volunteers
In this role the facilitators manage one Conversational English session each week. These sessions are very informal, and there is no requirement for students to come, so the number of students attending sessions is quite variable. The purpose of these sessions is to help international students improve their everyday English, improve their confidence in speaking and listening to English, and improve their understanding of the New Zealand accent, slang, and cultural differences. The role of the Conversational English facilitator is to keep the conversation going.
Language Mentors
Language Mentors are matched with international students that have requested more help. Their role is to meet 1 on 1 with the student, at a time that works best for them both, and to identify what they need help with. Again, this is very similar to Conversational English in that the sessions will be quite informal, and there is no teaching involved, your role is just to hold conversation.
Full training and the ability to reach out to the coordinator at any time.
Requirements
Patience, understanding, confidence in English conversation and open-mindedness
Time commitment
Group sessions Monday at 4pm, Wednesday at 5pm and Fridays at 2pm. One to one sessions to be arranged with mentee.
