Purpose

NZ Red Cross is focused on preparing for and responding to disasters and emergencies, supporting refugees as they rebuild their lives, and providing community services such as delivering Meals on Wheels.

Description

Volunteer as a young humanitarians coordinator and support 10 - 15-year-olds to take humanitarian action in their communities through New Zealand Red Cross Young Humanitarian programme.

New Zealand Red Cross Young Humanitarians aims to improve lives by inspiring young people to act on the humanitarian issues they care about through volunteering. The programme consists of six modules on topics like climate change, nuclear war, inclusion, and migration and is linked to local volunteering opportunities.

Your tasks:

  • Co-ordinators are responsible for organising volunteers, creating volunteer rosters and co-ordinating volunteer tasks to make workshops and community-based action possible.

  • Finding local volunteering opportunities

  • Organising course catering and workshop materials

  • Coordinating transport (if needed).

  • Providing feedback after the programme is delivered.

The role can be completed by one person, or as a team - it's up to you what and when you'd prefer! You can also expect support from the our team, to assist and guide you along the way.

Note: The programme is in its planning stage and a key outcome for this year will be to map out next steps to grow this exciting programme into a sustainable, annual activity for young people in our community.

Requirements

  • Be organised, care about sustainability, have initiative and good communication skills.

  • Pass a police vetting check

  • Provide details of two referees that we can contact. They could be your employer, professor, friend, or someone who knows you well.
    Your referees can’t be related to you or part of your extended family, nor be your partner or spouse, nor live at the same address as you.

Time commitment

  • Dedicate three to four hours of your time per week.

  • Be flexible – shifts could vary from week to week.
